A cruise in Alaska wildlife - Seeing Alaska Up Close and Personal

Getting there has not been easy. We flew from Tampa to Seattle to visit a friend there, sleeping in the Marriott Seattle Airport for a morning flight via Vancouver to Prince Rupert, where the airport is located on an island, so that a bus ferry, then a ferry ride to the Crest Motor Hotel for another night. The next morning after a tour of the city and the countryside, we finally board the yacht.

The passengers included a retired doctor and his wife,two bankers, a social worker and massage therapist to begin their withdrawal, and now a rich man who had helped start a computer company in a garage and his wife, as our writer and photographer. The crew consists of captain, mate, chief cook, naturalist, two maids who also made huts, and a naturalist intern.

The 105-foot Safari Spirit ship very impressive, with well-appointed rooms, a room richly decorated. Our cabin has two single beds, privatebathroom with shower, adjustable thermostat, a dressing table, dresser, two closets and lots of space. There were windows, but so high that they had no opinion. Our cabin was very quiet. (The two aft cabins, closer to the engine, had some vibration and noise when the boat was underway.) The most elegant cabins stood on the deck with king-size bed and large sliding glass doors to a balcony.

It 'was in fact, as the brochure said, a great tripcruise ship, but how to get around in your private yacht. In fact, I was hanging from the bridge most of the time we were on the road, get the eye of the master journey after our progress in the standings, and hear stories about how the whales migrate and the captain and mate with the experience of swimming whales travel search. On two afternoons I also have to take the wheel for an hour or so.

The Safari Spirit was an intimate in the heart of Alaska to see up close and personal. Welearned how close and personal on the first night, when we conducted our first survey on the Zodiac boat. We had arrived in Foggy Cove, which was in effect, with the mist rising all around the area, still and serene as a Japanese landscape painting. I was crouched behind a naturalist, shivering from the cold (I had just returned from Florida and wondered why I was not long underwear and a full-length alpaca coat worn), when we saw the bear. It 'been a brown bear (itsaying the shape of teddy bear face and shoulder bump over color - blacks bears have a hump and a pointed snout). E 'was grazing on grass in a meadow near the coast (bears feed mainly on grass in spring, eat salmon during the spawning season in autumn). We close the board and slid silently near the shore, watching the bear and the bear looked at us. We sat in a trance for a while 'until the bear decided to check us and came out stronger on a log, but fewfeet of us, where we quickly left. We saw many bears on other days, but this was special because it was our first, and it was so close.

We spent the night at anchor in the bay, and the next day exploring more of the Zodiac and kayaking. Then we cruise to Ketchikan and checked the museum and other high spots are, fortunately, a day when none of the big ships in port.

Monday morning we left early, cruise through the Misty Fjords NationalWilderness and monument arrived in Bay Yes, again with a stretch of calm water. Three at once we took a seaplane tour of the area, we flew over the mountain lakes, and saw expanses of ice fields and glaciers, and mountain trails with the occasional mountain goat on steep slopes. In the evening was more kayaking, more exploration of the zodiac, and a hike to the waterfall.

Passing through these waterways remote coves and bays was great. We have a deep breaththe fresh air and stared at the view breathtaking view over our memory footprint. We rarely saw another boat. Mostly we've seen forests, dotted with the occasional village or fishing lodge. Each turn around the next point was a glimpse of a beautiful environment. The passengers tried to figure out how to assess the view, "enthuses 5", "5 ahhs", "incredible", "impressive", "mystic."

At night in our discussions in the room we had a lot to talk about. There were also lessons from thenaturalist, watch videos, books and an excellent reference on Alaska culture and nature. There was also a hot tub on deck to relax and watch the stars at night.

The next day was chock-Meyers, a fishing village, the population of 18 (including two families who had not spoken for years). We visited the small post office, which also houses the village pool table and talked to the locals, the postmistress, a man painted his fishing boat, the woman in the gift shop, which has warned usThere has been sighted on the trail that morning, the widow who wove baskets to sell. In the afternoon we went with the boats for an 'island to explore an old house. Come through the woods of our orange float suits we wear to the reception we have looked strange Martians invade or guerrilla forces moving through the orange trees. That day, the head chef at Block Myers had loaded the supplies and we had a dinner on the deck of fresh salmon, crab and barbecue ribs. And fresh bread,we had every day.

By now we had seen several bears, a big black bear, various shades of brown, one with a puppy, like eagles, various seabirds, dolphins and sea otters. And we were to appreciate more and more streams we were going through, seeing the real Alaska wilderness. The Tongass National Forest which we navigate through the largest national forest in the United States, 17 million hectares. And 'the wilderness, quiet, large pieces of old-growthtrees ... just touched a desert with spectacular scenery. There are many streams and waterfalls and lakes because of high rainfall, and more bears and eagles than anywhere else in the world.

As we know from Prince Rupert on the Canadian border between Alaska and traveled north to Juneau, it was like going back in geologic time. We could see that the same differences in vegetation succession through the centuries as we went by fully mature lush forest to the glaciers, asreturn to the ice age in the form of capsules. After the ice age, lichens and mosses as pioneer plants, when Fireweed, bird droppings later put shrubs and planting trees, willows and poplars and alders, which ends spruce and hemlock trees. It takes about 300 years to grow a forest, and every mile we go is like going back 10-15 years of history. And the glaciers are retreating and are still moving and casting of the country. We started snow-capped mountains increasingly devoid of trees, as we shall seeNorth Cross.

Our next city was the Norwegian fishing village of Petersburg, and we moored next to dozens of fishing boats, which are reflected in the waters at sunset. We walked the city, food, and after dinner went to Kave Kato, the local dance hall / lounge. Our nutty naturalist - we started to catch on to his tricks - he told them at the door to control knives or weapons, and if you have not, they give you one. There were a lot of beard and boots, but notguns, and we got some locals, most of them think of coming to Florida in the winter would be a good idea to know.

The next day we walked in the forest, unlike the usual nature trekking, because instead of peace and tranquility, not to frighten the wild animals, they are told not to eat too much wear and noise. Last Friday we went to Tracy Arm. The captain revvedthe actions of our nose closer to straight up for a waterfall, the water pounding on the front. Then we crossed to the north and south arms of Sawyer Glacier, then reached out to Zodiac, going around Berg brilliant milky turquoise water with ice chips. That evening the ship we saw a huge black bear mother and her two cubs walking in a meadow along a river, a fitting tribute to our last night aboard. We all agree that the millionspeople who come to Alaska does not have much experience with what we did at the Safari Spirit.

In Juneau, we were collected by companies in the City North in a cool 1937 Touring Car. Some people have a tour of Mendenhall Glacier, the rest of us caught the beginning of the parade of dancers from Native American tribal communities in all corners of Alaska and the celebration of military veterans from the Juneau Convention Center.

You can add post-cruise tours to Anchorage, Fairbanks and Denali National Park for some fishing or you can stay in a fly-in lodge.

A November 2009 article on www.mahalo.com Snopes.com claims that thousands of dolphins are killed by the inhabitants of a small fishing village in Denmark known as the Faroe Islands. Perched on cliffs and facing eastwards to the Kilifi creek and Indian Ocean, the Mnarani Club has a lovely position and is treated to a constant gentle breeze. After a change in management, the club has been refurbished, and reopened its doors in December 1996.

One of the most stunning aspects of the hotel is the new 750sq meter freeform swimming pool. Your first view of the pool is as you enter the hotel and pass the members bar-through wide windows you see the pool with its disappearing horizon merging into the creek and the ocean beyond-a seemingly unbroken stretch of water continuing from the hotel to the horizon. Peter describes this as the wow view-everyone who sees it for the first time explains "Wow!"

A high dramatic thatch roof extends the full length of the main building. Walls are brightly white washed and the hotel has been simply furnished with quality items and an eye catching blue and yellow color-scheme. Star shaped lights hang from the thatch; hand-blown blue glass is used in the main dining room which also has that wonderful view of pool and creek. Anew seafood and pasta bar has been created at the beach level.

Mnarani goal is to be very simple but very good. The manager is keen to create an atmosphere-something fun and slightly wacky to hark back to Mnarani earliest days as a club focusing on water sports.

From the club, steps take you down the cliff to a small sandy cove below. There are thatched sun-shelters on the beach, a small shop and the jetty. Because you are inside a deep water creek, and so close to the ocean, it is possible to indulge in all manner of water-related activities: sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, scuba diving, snorkeling and big game fishing. You can try your hand at sailing a traditional Arab "ngarawa", take PADI instructions, or go for a creek safari with a picnic and enjoy the many bird species which make Kilifi Creek their home.

There are a total of 84 rooms, and guests have three accommodation options. There are the ocean view rooms which are in double stories thatched buildings; the ocean view cottages which are tucked further away and can offer a less expensive alternative for families whose children want their own room. Bedrooms are simple and bright with colorful furnishings and natural wood finishes.

All rooms have bath or shower, fans and/or air conditioning, safes, and direct dial telephones. There is squash court and a TV/Video room.

Mnarani is an informal member's club and offers special rates and services to members. Nonmember guests are welcome on a temporally membership basis.

Journeying Through Dorset - & The Jurassic Coast

The county of Dorset on England's south coast is a county of great contrast but one that will reward the determined traveller again and again. Take a break from driving and jump the three-hour rail journey from London Waterloo to Bournemouth. Deer can often be seen as you pass through the New Forest after Southampton, so keep one eye open.

Bournemouth is a clean and prosperous seaside city with hundreds of hotels ranging from the tiniest, to large international standard establishments. The beach is long and sandy, and though it may be busy on the weekends in the summer, it is long enough to accommodate all comers.

Five miles to the east you will find the pretty ancient town of Christchurch where the Priory stands cheek by jowl with the ruined mediaeval monastery. Stroll beside the twin rivers of Avon and Stour as they head for the sheltered harbour and onward to the sea at Mudeford Quay. The Quay is well worth a visit too, if only to watch the kids of all ages pulling the crabs from the fast flowing Run as it dashes through the channel.

To the west of Bournemouth is the revitalised town of Poole, and the huge natural harbour, second in size only to Sydney. Take a boat trip to Brownsea Island and spot the rare red squirrels. Visit Sandbanks too, and millionaires row, where film stars, pop people and sportsmen and women like to take a fancy to the modern art deco homes.

From the end of the Sandbanks peninsula take the old chain link ferry to Studland Bay. There is a beautiful sandy beach here too and you can walk along the shore to the pretty village of Studland, but be aware that this is a nudist beach. And it's used, at all times of the year, making the patrons much hardier souls than I! It's not unknown for them to approach strangers too. Methinks they hide a weird sense of humour!

From there, head south towards Swanage. Stop off at Wareham and take a drink at the Inns on the picturesque quay. Take the Swanage road and pass the impressive ruin of Corfe Castle. Spend a while climbing the fortifications, and experience the feel of what it must have been like defending a fortress in the middle ages.

Swanage is a small typically English seaside town, almost unchanged in the last fifty years, and no less attractive for that. You can arrive there by steam train on the Swanage Railway from Wareham. Travel west of Swanage and the terrain becomes wilder. This is Purbeck country, the Purbeck Hills, Purbeck stone, and the Jurassic coast.

Towering cliffs, strange rock formations such as the Durdle Door, and Lulworth Cove are worth seeking out. This coast is known as the Jurassic coast for the vast number of dinosaur remains that have been and still are regularly discovered. The original Jurassic Park! Continue westward to Weymouth, another English seaside town. But Weymouth has much more to offer than most. The quayside that boasts working fishing vessels coming and going on every tide, the nature reserve, and the monk's swannery at Abbotsbury. Buy fresh fish and crabs from the boats moored at the quay, take the seasonal quick ferry to Jersey and Guernsey. It's a four hour trip but you can be there and back in a day. And don't forget to visit the strange place that is Portland Bill to the south and west of the town. It is here in Portland harbour that the Olympic Games sailing events will take place in 2012.

Continue westward to Lyme Regis on the Devon border. It was here that Meryl Streep filmed the famous scenes from A French Lieutenant's Woman on the Cobb, the old stone quay that curls out into the channel. Walk on it at your peril in high winds, for it is slippery, and not flat!

Time to turn inland. Beaminster and the old church, before continuing on to the county town of Dorchester. This is Thomas Hardy country, there is a statue to him at the top of the High Street. Dorchester is Casterbridge in his books, The Mayor of Casterbridge, and Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and there are memories of him everywhere.

Continue northward to Shaftesbury and Sherborne, home of Sir Walter Raleigh. Visit the Abbey, the castle and the antiques shops that abound in the town. In the north of the county the countryside and the people differ markedly to the costal strip. A slower pace of life, more time for everything. The land is rolling, green hills on chalk downland that is home to rare breeds of sheep. In places huge sculptures have been carved from the hillside where the thin topsoil has been removed revealing the white chalk beneath. White horses, riders on horses, and the mediaeval pornography that is the Cerne Abbas Giant. Visit Blandford Forum too, another riverside town that can trace its heritage back to Roman times, and beyond.

Take a slight detour over the border into Wiltshire and see the county capital of Salisbury and the beautiful cathedral with the tallest spire in England.

Dorset is a fine county to explore, full of quaint thatched cottages, and beautiful pubs that anyone can enter at any reasonable time. Rest your feet for an hour, you don't need to buy alcohol if you prefer not, you'd be made just as welcome buying soft drinks and hearty crusty rolls. For the most part the food is good and fairly priced. Distances in Dorset between the towns are small and you can see a great deal in a week, but hey, two weeks would be all the better!

The lagoon's ecosystem supports more than 225 fish species, a variety of phytoplankton, algae and aquatic plants, over 720 species of non-aquatic plants around the lagoon. This list includes a number of rare, threatened and endangered species, including the Barakudia limbless slope. This wealth of life earned Chilika the designation of a 'Ramstad Site', which is a wetland of International Importance. The Nalabana Island within the lagoon is notified as a bird sanctuary, to give escape to your adventurous traits, indulge in a scooter ride, canoeing, kayaking and boating in the water sports complex near the OTDC-run Panthniwas as comfortable accommodation. Breakfast in the floating restaurant and naval exercises by the Indian Navy egg you on to extent your stay at BarkuL.

But if you want privacy. Situated at the southern end of Chilika, Rambha cove is dotted with a number of islands, each com¬peting with the other to excel in natural beauty. Each of these inviting islands popping out of the vast stretch of blue has a story to tell. A breakfast island was once used by a British officer named snodgross, who was the collecter of Ganjam.He stayed in a bungalow on the island. Three kilometers away from Rambha way stands an architectural marvel in the shape of a conical pillar near the picturesque Ghantasala hill. Another three kilometers away stands the Honeymoon Island once used by Bruisers for picnicking and- partying. The crystal clear water of the inland and the luxurious bed of red and green worldwide decorations are simply captivating. The Birds Island, four kilometer from rambha, is a must-see for its wealth of herbs, shrubs and creepers.. The lake's eastern snare is equally tempting because of the playful Irrawaddy Dolphins, a 30-km stretch of sandbar, the Rajhansa Islands and the mouth of Chilika which provides a stretch of an endless, unexplored beach to relax at. This adventure and fun-filled boat journey of nearly four hours is a destination itself.

KALIJAI TEMPLE: Temple kalijai is one of the important attractions for the visitors. It is located at a hillock surrounded by blue water bears .The many folklores and legends of Chilika refer to goddess as the reigning deity of the lagoon. According to legend a young girl who was drowned and then vener¬ated as a goddess after being sanctified .This small rocky island is having a group of people who worshiped Devi- kalijai in the temple. No boatman or fisher man ventures out without invoking the blessing of Devi-kalijai for a safe passage. Local folklores describes that the story of kalijai, a poor girl, who did not wish to marry in an island name parikuda because there is no link with other place. But at that time the tradition of the society was selected. she has to go her father in-law's house. Father of kalijai arranged the whole thing for her in a traditional way. Selected a day, given order to a boatman on behalf of 'a marriage ceremony of kalijai' towards parikuda. Before arrive to Parikuda they should cross the lake. Both father and daughter started their ferry towards Parikuda Island to her wedding. Just on the way, a storm brew and the sky became dark & the boat was veiled in the gorgeous lake. Kalijai disappeared in to the dark water. But it was for a short time. Then the sky became clear. There was no storm. Just the father of kalijai alive....he cried....he shouted... kalijai...kalijai....that's all. It is located at a hillock surrounded by blue water bears .The temple is dedicated to her memory. Each year at makar-sankranti, after the harvest people from different places coming worship Devi kalijai. Today the temple is the witness as a milestone or the burning example for the society.

AROUND CHILIKA: There are many places of interest that can be approached from Barkul. The famous Narayani temple with a perennial stream and the Bhagabati temple are the important destinations. For natural lovers, there is the Nirmaljhar waterfall.

A Guide to Lindos

Lindos is a very popular destination, and many visitors find themselves returning year after year. From the affectionately known 'ooh-ah corner' on your approach to Lindos, arguably one of the most breathtaking views in Greece can be seen. Under the imposing 2nd century BC acropolis lies a maze of narrow, vibrant streets surrounded by whitewashed, sugar cube houses with elegant doorways and intricately pebbled courtyards.

The 4 beaches, all within easy walking distance of Lindos centre, are also diverse. A large, sandy, family friendly beach with Blue Flag status shelves gently into the crystal clear waters. Several beachside tavernas and WCs are found here, and pedaloes, motorboats and other water sports for the more adventurous are offered during summer. An excellent glass bottom boat trip departs from here, and is a must-do during your stay! Pallas beach is more intimate, and is the home of several excellent tavernas, some of whom will serve you from your sunbed, such as Skala on Pallas beach.

For complete tranquility, head to St Pauls bay, a quaint unspoilt cove, usually peaceful enough to relax while listening to the soothing sounds of the sea. This area is also fabulous for snorkeling amongst the surrounding rocks. The shelved sandy beach close to St Pauls chapel offers spectacular views of the acropolis and St Pauls bay, and a small taverna offers drinks and snacks - and champagne for celebratory drinks after wedding ceremonies, which popular at this location.

All Rhodes beaches are kept very clean, and because of the sheer number available, none is usually overcrowded. One of the unusual features of Lindos is that even though during the day the village thrives with visitors, the streets are totally pedestrianised, the only transport being the occasional moped or the traditional Lindos donkeys.

Shops selling a wide range of cosmopolitan goods and gifts line the streets, along with a diverse range of tavernas and bars to suit every taste. One of the best ways to spend a lazy afternoon is with a cold frappe in Yiannis bar on the main street while people watching or listening to local chatter.

The climb to the acropolis is arduous but worth it, for the views of Lindos, St Pauls bay and the never ending blue sea from the ancient castle walls are nothing short of spectacular. On the path towards the acropolis, Lindean ladies sell traditional, hand-embroidered tableware. If the walk is too strenuous, take a donkey (Lindos taxi) to the castle walls.

Within the ancient acropolis site is a relief of a ship, carved in 170 BC by the Lindeans. Walk through the Doric columns, up the "stairs to heaven" to the top level of the acropolis, where the part-renovated Temple of Athena stands, constructed during the 4th century AD. Directly below the acropolis, adjacent to the newly built town square, lies the ancient theatre. A good proportion of the seating area carved into the rock remains today.

Also within the village are many churches in different styles, often with intricate frescoes lining the walls. There are many 'Captain's houses', built the 16th to 18th century, whose exquisite architecture is unique to Greece. Many of these have been recently restored under the supervision of the Greek Archaeological Service, and several are now open to the public.

Nightlife in Lindos is vibrant and friendly. The majority of visitors experiencing evening culture in Lindos are couples and families, and increasingly popular wedding parties. Choose from romantic evenings dining on one of the many rooftop tavernas, or relaxing in one of the many welcoming. All bars are English speaking, and make you feel like a local on your first visit. Local children often play in the streets in an evening, and children are welcomed in restaurants and bars until late at night.

There are several nightclubs in Lindos, playing Greek, European and British popular dance music. By law, no loud music can be played after 12pm, so the nightclubs are soundproofed. Nightclubs are easy to find in the evening, yet unimposing on the traditional streets of the village. At the top of the village, at 'ooh-ah corner', an outdoor all-night dance club, the Ampitheatre, can be found, with great views of the morning sunrise. Free taxis to this venue are available from the town square.

Nightlife

Med East is, in our opinion, the best restaurant in Lindos. The food is excellent, very Mediterranean but with different dishes to all the rest. The ambience is always superb, very laid back, and the views of the acropolis are stunning. Some of the dishes served are, Steak with melted cheese & bacon and a slice of pineapple in a dark cherry sauce.,Steak in a Madagascan green pepper sauce, Chicken in an orange and cream sauce,Chicken in a mango and cream sauce,Lamb in lemon, Steak served with garlic butter,Coq au Vin. Manolis always offers a friendly and warm welcome and the music is very ambient and atmospheric it makes for a romantic meal. This is now becoming a very popular venue for wedding receptions so is worth booking in advance.

Dionyssis is also excellent, the food here is expensive but both the menus and interior decor are far superior to most of the Lindos restaurants. Ambrosia offers a good selection of Greek traditional dishes with lovely views ofthe Acropolis from the rooftop taverna. Mythos, just off the main square, serves a good selection of traditional Greek food including mixed Greek plates and meat and fish platters to share. The rooftop is partly built into a rockface, combining romantic lighting with stunning views of Lindos. Agostinos situated just below lindos reception has lovely rooftop with views over Lindos worth a meal, try the traditional dishes and the Octopus in a chili tomato sauce is a must.

Skala, on Pallas beach,serves lovely food on the beachfront, and usually hosts a weekly barbecue with an excellent choice of meats and salads for a fixed price, Oasis Taverna in Lindos offers really good food with excellent views they hold a greek night every friday worth a visit. Pallestra is situated in the far corner of Lindos main beach and offers superb views of the acropolis and Lindos Bay, they serve excellent seafood and Mezes, Lindos has as varied a nightlife as it does dining scene. You can chill out in a traditional courtyard, watch big screen sports or party away till the early hours!

SPORTS BARS

Many bars now offer big screen football and major sporting events but there are two main sports bars in Lindos.

GIORGOS (opposite Ambrosia restaurant). This is the first major sports bar in Lindos, they have a big screen and TVs allover, there's even one in the floor! Giorgos (and Giorgos 2 on the smal beach) offers a vast choice of beers very much catering to the british market.

RED ROSE (Lindos main street). This bar has a alot of outside seating on the front terrace with big screen.

BARS TO RELAX/CHILL OUT

Even many of the livelier music bars have quieter outside terraces but some of the nicer bars to just relax and take in the views are

CAPTAINS HOUSE (walk past Museum Bar and follow signs for the Acropolis). This is a traditional Lindian Captains House with the main bar situated in the front courtyard. Very atmospheric and a good place for pre dinner drinks.

RAINBIRD BAR (off to the left on the road to the small/pallas beach). Boasts the best views in Lindos and a nice place to rest for a beer after your walk up from the beach.

LINDOS BY NIGHT (down the road from Courtyard Bar). The inside bar of Lindos By Night can get quite lively but for a relaxing night with views over the village towards the Acropolis take a seat in one of the pretty garden terraces.

YANNIS BAR (on a corner as you turn from the main street towards Lindos Reception). Situated on a very busy corner and one of the best places in Lindos if you enjoy a bit of people watching.

MUSIC BARS

Many bars worth visiting but this list covers a few as you walk down from Lindos Reception/Top Car Park.

60S BAR. Not only 60s music as the DJ does tend to play to the crowd. Can get quite lively, especially when they're in a party atmosphere and setting fire to the bar!

DREAMS BAR. A small bar run by a mother and son duo. Keen to get everyone in the party spirit they often bring out the fancy dress box and mum has everybody up dancing.

SOCRATES. The owner Socrates is well known in Lindos and you'll often see him at the small beach during the day. The music here isn't the chart stuff you'll here in most of the bars and tends to be more rock - in fact Socrates is one of the people behind the 'Rhodes Rock' festival.

KARMA (on a small side street off to the left). Nice little bar and something different being the only Reggae bar in Lindos.

ANTIKA. One of the smartest bars in Lindos with glass bar, white leather chairs and uber cool music to match the decor.

MANOLIS - ZOUK BAR. Manolis has been in Lindos for many years though they moved to this spot a few years back. The bar still has an old olive press in the centre that often gets used for a bit of impromptu podium dancing!

COURTYARD (past Kalypso). Great Lindian decor with a dance floor and DJ. As well as the inside main bar there's a courtyard and bar/roof terrace upstairs. Greek Night with live Bouzouki Greek music and dancing every Sunday.

IKON. Now run by Michalis (formerly of Lindos By Night) this small but stylish bar is now a lot livelier than it was and even has a saxophonist playing the odd night.

Other bars you'll come across in the village are ATMOSPHERE, COLOSSUS, LINDIAN HOUSE, 404, PALS, NIKO'S BAR, MUSEUM BAR, SINATRA'S, APOLLO AND SUNBURNT ARMS.

NIGHTCLUBS

There are 5 nightclubs in Lindos though the ones in the centre are soundproofed and are unobtrusive if that's not your thing.

NIGHT LIFE (opposite Courtyard Bar). Not the smartest club in Lindos but they do have BAR CODE next door which is a good late night (or rather, early morning!) bar offering good food all night.

QUPI (behind Courtyard Bar). An old favourite that re-opened in 2005. Seems to go in and out of favour a bit but definitely worth checking out.

ARCHES (small road opposite Yannis Bar). One of the most popular clubs in Lindos, you'll find Arches busy even in low season as it's popular with locals.

ACROPOLIS (on the road from the main square to the beach). The only open air club actually in Lindos but for some reason it doesn't seem to open every year.

AMPHITHEATRE (free taxis from the main square, it's up on a hill above the village). Smart open air club with great views as it's on what many call 'ooh aah corner'. A huge space, it takes some filling but has a great atmosphere peak season.

Staying in Lindos, the village itself lends itself to studio self catering accomodation although in the last 5 years many luxury villas have been built to cater for families and the growing number of wedding viitors. Many tour operators offer all inclusive holidays at the hotels on the outskirts of Lindos.

The Cove (They don't affliction about us - Michael Jackson)

The Cove exposes the slaughter of more than 20000 dolphins and porpoises in Taiji, Japan every year, and how their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan and other parts of Asia, often labeled as whale meat. SeaWorld Orlando - Vacationers Reports

If you love sealife, fast rides and beautiful scenery, then SeaWorld is for you. This is one place that is a "must visit" for us on every single trip to Orlando. From the minute you enter the park and you have your photo taken by one of the official photographers, you just know you are in for a fun packed day. There are plenty of ticket variations available including the Orlando Flexticket avaialble from this site, just follow one of the links above to see what options are available to you and your family.

We usually pick up a park map, head for the Restrooms to make sure that everyone is set for the first part of our day at SeaWorld. Having young twins makes the Restroom trip a must do that you are not searching for them later on.

We usually study the times of the main shows, which for us is the Shamu Adventure, Blue Horizons (Dolphins) and Wild Artic. The twins also love Dolphin Cove and Stingray Lagoon. Once we have familiarised ourselves with the show times, off we go to the Dolphin Nursery.

This as the name suggests is where SeaWorld raise their baby dolphins, a curator is always at hand to explain how they raise the baby dolphins and regularly give talks on them. This is a great photo oppurtunity for you budding photographers.

Then its the Penguin Encounter, once you enter this exhibition, and the familiar music hits your ears, it is hard not to fall in love with these animals, all stood there in their little black and white suits, they now have more than 200 penguins for you to see. Their simulated surroundings enable you to see them diving and swimming in the freezing conditions of their natural habitat. The habitat is similar to the Antarctic with its icy water and rocky surroundings, the penguins feel quite at home here.

To make them feel more at home, SeaWorld produce 6,000 pounds of snow, this falls daily inside the naturalistic habitat There are several types of penguins here, these include king penguin, gentoo penguin, chinstrap penguin and the rockhopper penguin.

Two areas for viewing make it an ideal place to get out of the warm florida sunshine, one is a 120ft moving standon / walkon belt in front of their habitat, the second is a slightly raised area where you can stand and take some wonderful photo's of the Penguins and other birds. There's also an interactive section once you leave the viewing area

Blue Horizons

Now off to the new dolphin show, Blue Horizons. One valuable tip is to get there early if you want the best seats in the house! Centre stage about half way up is where we find suits us all, from here you have a fabulous view of all the show and is a fantastic photo spot. The show now involves acrobatic dolphins, whales and exotic birds that soar above your head in this amazing show. It is more like a theatrical stage show than a show involving dolphins and a few birds. This is a show that brings both animals and people together to show you just how intelligent they are.

Shark Encounter

As you enter this underwater world of sharks, the feeling of being prey enters your mind. They state that this is the world's largest underwater acrylic tunnel you will find. Different species of eels, venomous fish and barracuda along with an endless variety of sharks swim all around you as the moving walk way takes you into their habitat. Although you are 100% safe in this environment, you just can't feeling you are being watched. It always reminds me of JAWS

Manatee Rescue

The manatee's at SeaWorld have all been rescued from the waters around Florida's wetlands. These large gentle giants glide through the water as if floating on air. You can view these fabulous animals from above and below the water, you are lead down under in to a large auditorium where the world of the manatee is explained to you in a short film. After which you can stroll through the underwater world of the manatee.

Dolphin Cove

Dolphin Cove can be found in Key West on your park map. An outside interactive area where you can get up close and personal with these fabulous animals. At certain times throughout the day, you can purchase fish so that you can interact with the dolphins, give them a head rub or just take a few memorable holiday snaps. Beware of the seagulls trying to take away your fish! A dolphin trainer will explain all you need to know about these happy creatures. One of the most popular places at SeaWorld for animal interaction, a great place for young children to learn about animals without them realizing it!

Stingray Lagoon

Again, as with Dolphin Cove this is located in Key West and is just before you get to the dolphins. A place where you can interact with these amazing creatures, feed them, touch and stroke their slithery bodies as they glide through the water. With more than 200 stingrays you are sure to see some action. The largest are around 5 ft in diameter. Although expect to have to wash your hands after you visit this area, it's a little bit smelly but still a great place to visit. Its a great place for young children to get up close with creature you only see on TV, the twins love this area too.

Wild Arctic

Get ready to enter a multi-level exploration centre. After a short film about what you will encounter you will be left to explore the hull of a 19th century exploration ship. Surrounded by nearly a million gallons of seawater, you will get to see Polar Bears, Harbor Seals and Walruses. Saving the best until last, you will get to see a Beluga Whale, white in colour and just so cute you want to take them home. Although how you would get them through customs I will never know! One of my favorite places and always a hit with the children.

Hospitality Centre and the Clydesdales

Fancy a cold beer? (21 and over with ID) For FREE? The hospitality centre is the home of the Beer School, and the food court along with a bar to sample a few of their beers including Budweiser or Bud! The gift shop carries all things Bud too, so here's the place for those gifts and souvenirs.

As you walk through the building, you are then lead to the Clydesdale stables where you can see up close one of the largest horse breeds in the world. These fabulous horses are the same ones that pull the Budweiser Carriage. You also get the chance to have your photo taken with one of these beautiful horses and also pet them. Them also parade them several times during the day through the park, amazing photo opportunity for horse lovers or beer lovers alike!

Clyde and Seamore Take Pirate Island

This is light entertainment for the whole family and will put a smile on everyone's face. This comical show always as our twins in stitches, especially when the sea lion and harbor seal make the trainers look so stupid. Set in a Pirate Ship, the trainers have the animals perform different tricks as they reward them with fishy treats. This is another one of SeaWorld's newest shows and always seems very popular on our visits. If you want to get up close, sit to the right of the stage where the trainer's path meets the steps. The harbor seal walks right by you!

Kraken

If you like High Speed Roller Coasters then this ride is definitely for you. This is a floorless coaster and said to be the tallest and fastest in Orlando, reaching speeds of over 60 mph, and heights that tower above all of SeaWorld. I always head for the rear of the ride because the thrill is heightened as you are flicked over the edge of the multiple highs and lows. Although the front row is awesome it's not for the faint hearted. As you are dangled from your seat, you are pushed through seven inverted turns, the ride is over before you draw breath. Ride it if you dare!

Journey to Atlantis

This is definitely not your usual log flume. It's a log flume come roller coaster rolled in to one. There's a near vertical drop of around sixty feet that seems to come from no where. I love rides like this, it keeps you guessing throughout the ride. The special effects just add to it but expect to get wet, very wet. Hold on!

Shamu Adventure and Believe

We have been visiting Orlando since 1998 and even though I have always loved dolphins, for me, they are nothing compared to the Killer Whale. The entire Shamu family are involved in this spectacular show, it always brings tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat. They never cease to amaze me. I just wish I could be the one they pick to meet Shamu and get the chance to stroke him. What a fabulous way to end your day at SeaWorld.

The show involves the trainers bringing the family members out and interacting with them, showing that they have 100% trust in these beautiful creatures. You must make sure you have your camera or camcorder, if not you will be so so disappointed at the missed photo opportunity. The stadium fills up very quick and so early planning is essential if you want to see this show.

The children love to get splashed by the Killer Whales as they swim passed and wet everyone with their fluke. Cutting through the freezing cold sea water. Although we now sit in the upper tier of the stand to avoid getting wet, not good for your electrical equipment but amazing fun for the youngsters. The breathtaking displays of power, grace and beauty will amaze you and your family.

There's one part of the show where the trainers water ski on the backs of the Killer Whales, they then get the Killer Whale to push them under water and then both trainer and Killer Whale leap up out of the water before diving back in. Both are airborne for a brief moment and totally out of the water.

The trainer is also launched from the water by the Killer Whale in another magnificent display of power and trust. Its just amazing when you think that the largest Killer Whale they have is around twelve thousand pounds and they swim in around seven million gallons of sea water There's also an underwater viewing area to the front of the stadium where you can see them playing, this is also a good place to take photo's if you have a fast enough camera. By far the most amazing show you will see at SeaWorld. Memories that last a lifetime.

Our overview of SeaWorld

This can be a fast paced day if your time is limited, but if not we suggest you allow a whole day to make sure you see all what SeaWorld as to offer. Get there early and stay till late. Planning your days around the shows you want to see will help your day go smoothly and ensure you get the most from your time at SeaWorld.
