This area has a lot more to offer than just the well-known tourist attractions, so if you plan a trip to Knysna its worth getting out a road map.
Knysna caters for everyone's needs. Go for a walk in the forest and you'll see clear streams, lush ferns and enormous indigenous trees. One can laze on a beach, soar in the sky or even add to your art collection. And if you look a bit wider the surrounding area includes the villages of Sedgefield, Brenton, Buffalo Bay, Rheenendal and Noetzie. You time in Knysna will certainly make you book your next trip in advance simply because there so much to see.
SEDGEFIELD is a nature lover's dream and is one of the most picturesque places on the South African coast. All within a few kilometres you can go from lake to fynbos-covered dune to the Indian Ocean. There's plenty of accommodation to suit any budget.
Bask in the sun, throw a line in the water or even try your hand at sailing on any one of the four uncrowded beaches in Sedgefield. Cloud Nine, a popular launching and landing pad for paraglider pilots who soar above the lagoon is another place to visit, or go to Myolio beach where kite-surfers skid through the surf. The two Saturday markets offer a more leisurely pastime, so drop in at any of the wide variety of shops and restaurants.
BRENTON-ON-SEA with its pristine beaches, overlooks the Indian Ocean and hugs the hillside leading from Knysna's Western Head. This is the only place in the world where you can see the Brenton blue butterfly.
If you want to go for a tandem flight, there's a popular paragliding site above Brenton Beach. Quad bikers are catered for on the ridge of the Western Head, or you can go for a stroll on the beach or go fishing. Brenton-on-Lake, on the lagoon side, has jetties for launching boats and kayaks.
There are several restaurants within the Brenton and Belvidere area.
Visit RHEENENDAL country district if you in the mood to shop. It is just west of Knysna. Along the Rheenendal Ramble you'll find painters, woodcarvers, ceramicists, screen printers, plant nurseries, bowl turners, tea gardens and restaurants.
There are many historical trails in the area if you need a walk after lunch, as well as the old goldmine at Milkwood. Go for a guided tour, visit the museum and have a treat at the tea garden.
BUFFALO BAY, a popular family holiday destination, is situated midway between Sedgefield and Knysna. The beach is perfect for beach fishing as well as whale and dolphin spotting and is safe for swimming and surfing. The more adventurous can always saddle up for an exhilarating horse ride through the surf.
NOETZIE, a sheltered cove east of the Knysna lagoon, borders the Sinclair Nature Reserve. Paddle up the river to look for fish eagles or swim or fish in the estuary. Dolphins, otters and numerous bird species abound in the area. Noetzie has a number of castles complete with battlements and turrets, which are private homes or guest houses.
