This area has a lot more to offer than just the well-known tourist attractions, so if you plan a trip to Knysna its worth getting out a road map.

Knysna caters for everyone's needs. Go for a walk in the forest and you'll see clear streams, lush ferns and enormous indigenous trees. One can laze on a beach, soar in the sky or even add to your art collection. And if you look a bit wider the surrounding area includes the villages of Sedgefield, Brenton, Buffalo Bay, Rheenendal and Noetzie. You time in Knysna will certainly make you book your next trip in advance simply because there so much to see.

SEDGEFIELD is a nature lover's dream and is one of the most picturesque places on the South African coast. All within a few kilometres you can go from lake to fynbos-covered dune to the Indian Ocean. There's plenty of accommodation to suit any budget.

Bask in the sun, throw a line in the water or even try your hand at sailing on any one of the four uncrowded beaches in Sedgefield. Cloud Nine, a popular launching and landing pad for paraglider pilots who soar above the lagoon is another place to visit, or go to Myolio beach where kite-surfers skid through the surf. The two Saturday markets offer a more leisurely pastime, so drop in at any of the wide variety of shops and restaurants.

BRENTON-ON-SEA with its pristine beaches, overlooks the Indian Ocean and hugs the hillside leading from Knysna's Western Head. This is the only place in the world where you can see the Brenton blue butterfly.

If you want to go for a tandem flight, there's a popular paragliding site above Brenton Beach. Quad bikers are catered for on the ridge of the Western Head, or you can go for a stroll on the beach or go fishing. Brenton-on-Lake, on the lagoon side, has jetties for launching boats and kayaks.

There are several restaurants within the Brenton and Belvidere area.

Visit RHEENENDAL country district if you in the mood to shop. It is just west of Knysna. Along the Rheenendal Ramble you'll find painters, woodcarvers, ceramicists, screen printers, plant nurseries, bowl turners, tea gardens and restaurants.

There are many historical trails in the area if you need a walk after lunch, as well as the old goldmine at Milkwood. Go for a guided tour, visit the museum and have a treat at the tea garden.

BUFFALO BAY, a popular family holiday destination, is situated midway between Sedgefield and Knysna. The beach is perfect for beach fishing as well as whale and dolphin spotting and is safe for swimming and surfing. The more adventurous can always saddle up for an exhilarating horse ride through the surf.

NOETZIE, a sheltered cove east of the Knysna lagoon, borders the Sinclair Nature Reserve. Paddle up the river to look for fish eagles or swim or fish in the estuary. Dolphins, otters and numerous bird species abound in the area. Noetzie has a number of castles complete with battlements and turrets, which are private homes or guest houses.

Visiting New Zealand - Fiordland National Park

In the south western corner of New Zealand's South Island lies a sparsely populated wilderness region which contains some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the World. This land of mountains, lakes, waterfalls and tranquil fiords - that give the region its name - is Fiordland National Park.

At over 1.2 million hectares, Fiordland is far and away the largest national park in New Zealand and in fact covers 5% of the area of the country. Most of the region is inaccessible by road but Te Anau and Manapouri are the best bases to start from, having both hotels and campsites. The small township of Tuatapere in the south also borders the national park.

The most popular route into Fiordland from the east is the Milford Road from Te Anau to Milford Sound. The road reaches an altitude of over 3000 feet and can be affected by snow and avalanches in the winter months though is usually passable - snow chains may be required in severe conditions. While you're at Milford Sound, the underwater observatory known as  Milford Deep is a fascinating place to visit. Many of the Milford Sound cruise itineraries call here so combine a visit with a cruise down the sound as far as the Tasman sea.

The other main tourist route is by boat from Manapouri across Lake Manapouri where you can visit the underground hydro electric power station before crossing the Wilmot Pass by bus to Deep Cove on Doubtful Sound. Here a second boat is joined to cruise the misty length of Doubtful Sound - the deepest of the fiords. You've a good chance here of seeing dolphins and the elusive fiordland crested penguins.

There are minor roads which head into the wilderness from just north of Tuatapere - notably those to Lake Hauroko and Lake  Monowai but for further exploration you're going to have to walk. That is if you don't want to pay out for a helicopter or to travel by sea round to the unpopulated west coast of South Island - there are multi-day cruises that do this provided by the firm Real Journeys.   

One of the most popular activities in Fiordland is hiking or tramping as it's called in New Zealand. The most well known route is probably the Milford Track which covers the 54km from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound in - normally - a walk of 4 days. The most popular tracks do require reservation with DOC (department of conservation) to ensure a place in the huts especially in high season. Other routes include the Routeburn Track which brings the walker into Fiordland from the East in 3 days over a spectacular high level route and the Dusky track which leads through the wilderness to Supper Cove on the remote Dusky Sound. Because of the challenging terrain - including river crossings - the Dusky Track is really only to be attempted by experienced wilderness trekkers. There are many more hiking opportunities in Fiordland National Park from easy to challenging and from coastal to alpine.

The mountain biker will find plenty to do - the Hauroko and Borland Roads offer access to the park's wild interior and there are boat services where you can be picked up or dropped off far from motor roads. Some of these are not regular services and you will need to check locally - tourist information can book these for you if required.

As for the traditional activities - hunting and fishing - there are many places to venture. For both sports a licence must generally be obtained from the National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau or from DOC but there are chances to catch brown and rainbow trout as well as to hunt red deer. The deer are an introduced species in New Zealand and numbers are kept under control in this way - the animals having no natural predators.

Whether you drive the spectacular Milford Road, take the boat to Doubtful Sound or venture deeper into the remote back country of Fiordland National Park, your visit will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of your trip to New Zealand.

Gibraltar - What to See Outside Town

There's plenty to see and do outside the obvious destinations of the Gibraltar's town centre and even the Upper Rock. Gibraltar has a quieter, less frequented side with natural beauty and Mediterranean views not to be missed.

Alameda Botanical Gardens

The gardens serve as a lush, peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of town. Located next to the cable car station, just 10 minutes walk from the town centre, the Alameda Gardens have been part of Gibraltar for many years. Here you'll find an impressive and well organised array of tree and plant species, along with quiet areas where you can picnic or rest in the shade. A small children's park lies at the lower edge of the park alongside the Alameda open-air theatre, a magical location used during summer for local performances.

Don't miss the charming wildlife conservation park which is part of the top edge of the gardens. Run by 3 full-time workers and a number of dedicated volunteers, the wildlife park is home to abandoned or homeless animals, many of whom have come over on ships. Currently it's home to many species of bird, terrapins, reptiles, bats, prairie dogs, pigs, monkeys and more.

100 Ton Gun

Of only four 100 ton guns ever created in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, two remain in Gibraltar and the other two are stationed in Malta. Although they were never fired, the two 100 ton guns could easily reach ships in the Straits of Gibraltar.

Parson's Lodge

This is an old British fort was built to protect Rosia Bay and naval galleons used to use it to collect ammunition and provisions during war. After the British victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, the damaged British Flagship, HMS Victory was brought to Rosia Bay. On board the ship, the dead body of Admiral Nelson was found inside a barrel of brandy tied around the central mast. His body was later transferred to another ship and taken back to England for burial.

Beaches

If you like a natural, quiet beach in the summer, you'd be well advised to go to Spain's Atlantic beaches to find it. However, beaches in Gibraltar offer their own interest in terms of local atmosphere and if you don't mind the crowds, they can make for a good day out.

Most people come laden with picnics and drinks in cool boxes, umbrellas and chairs, ready for a full day out, though beaches have basic kiosk facilities for emergency drinks, sweets or ice creams.

Catalan Bay

The Bay dates back to the 18th century when Genoese fishermen settled here. Today it's a favourite summer haunt for beach-loving Gibraltarians. As it's located on the eastern side of the Rock, the sun sinks behind the summit earlier than on the western side, offering a welcome break from the summer's heat. Don't forget to stop for morning coffee at on the terrace of the Caleta Hotel and enjoy its panoramic views in exquisite surroundings. Catalan Bay has a popular fish restaurant at the top of the hill and a few kiosks for sweets or ice creams.

Sandy Bay

Continuing 200 metres along the road from Catalan Bay, you reach Sandy Bay, another popular beach, also with a small kiosk for emergency refreshments. The beach is flanked by the apart hotel resort, Both Worlds.

Eastern Beach

This is the largest stretch of the three sandy beaches located on the Eastern side of the Rock and it is very popular with locals, being the nearest to town.

Camp Bay

On the western side of the Rock, just past Rosia Bay (a concreted lido in much need of repair), Camp Bay sits just past a short rock tunnel. At first sight, to be honest, it seems rather an ugly concrete lido jutting out to sea. But take a closer look and you'll find it's ideal for the kids with its large swimming pool and toddlers' pool, plus play park, as well as a couple of kiosks, a bar/restaurant and a small sandy cove. Here you can also enjoy the great views across the Straits to Spain and the many ships anchored offshore.

Little Bay

Follow through another tunnel and you'll arrive at Little Bay, another lido with pools and facilities on a smaller scale than in Camp Bay. The sea water in Camp Bay and Little Bay is generally crystal clear and considered to be the cleanest in Gibraltar.

The Marinas

There are two marinas in Gibraltar: Ocean Village and Queensway Quay. Both offer top class berthing and facilities, as well as a number of classy quayside restaurants and bars. Ocean Village is the larger one of the two and consequently offers a greater choice of bars and terraced restaurants, as well as several real estate agencies and boutiques.

From both marinas, various companies offer boat trips to view dolphins and/or whales in the wild. The boats not only allow you to see these magnificent creatures close at hand but you can also to enjoy excellent views of the Rock, Spain and Morocco, making for an unforgettable experience.

Europa Point

Still crying out for government investment, this stunning tourist spot offers its own form of natural beauty in the breathtaking and expansive views it offers. This is the southernmost tip of Europe, from where you stand overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar, between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic seas. On a clear day it is easy to see houses in Morocco and the mystical Rif Mountains.

Mosque

Built in 1997, the mosque is logically located at Europa Point facing Morocco, to serve the Muslim population of Gibraltar. The mosque may be visited at certain times of the day.

The Lighthouse

Sitting at the precarious Europa Point, this lighthouse has witnessed many a wrecked ship that has fallen to the perils of fierce winds and currents to be found at this point. The lighthouse dates back to 1841 and stands 49 metres above sea level with a range of around 37 kilometers.

Dolphin and whale watching

The warm waters of the Mediterranean make Gibraltar an ideal place for dolphins. Regular dolphin safaris leave Gibraltar for one or two hour tours of the Bay of Algeciras, home to a large community of dolphins. The boat trips depart from the popular marina Bay for anything up to a few hours or a full day. Throughout the year long-finned pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, common and striped dolphins can be seen regularly. From April to June sperm whales migrate through the Strait of Gibraltar and in July/August orcas come to the area. Occasionally, you'll be lucky enough to catch sight of a fin whale, the second largest species of whale.

Scuba diving with sharks with Stuart Cove in the bahamas. These are caribbean reef sharks and will not attack unless provoked or they mistake your hand for a fish. Depth was probably around 15ft and shark size possibly up to 6ft. Was filmed with a Canon s80 with no extra lighting. As you can see, I'm no professional cameraman.

Warm Maui Beaches Take the Chill Off Winter

By mid-February, most road trip planners start hankering for some fun in the sun and just don't want to wait another four months for the climate to catch up to desire. So they catch a plane to Maui, rent a Jeep and continue their road trip adventure with nothing but blue skies overhead.

- NORTH SHORE - North Shore action centers around Paia and the popular windsurfing found in Hookipa Beach. A seemingly endless expanse of deep blue water, white rock and crashing waves, this beach has been called the windsurfing capital of the world and is popular with daredevil surfers as well. However, it is not recommended that you swim here. The surf is gorgeous, but dangerous and below the waves are sharp coral reefs.

Paia the starting point for the Road to Hana. This serpentine 55-mile drive offers jaw dropping views of the coastline as well as lush rain forest niches and picture perfect waterfalls.

Make a note on your road trip planner that, at about the 32-mile marker, you'll find the exquisite Waianapanapa State Park. This park includes this gem of a black sand beach, great for swimming and will probably provide some of your best photographic moments. The park is rich with Hawaiian history and stairs will lead you to an icy cave pool, the secret hiding spot of a Hawaiian princess. It's 122 acres big, so there's plenty to keep you occupied for the entire day. Red Sand Beach is has a small cove great for snorkeling as well.

- SOUTH SHORE - The South Shore gets more than its fair share of sun and thus, you'll find a multitude of fine beaches here. Check out the world famous, Maui Ocean Center at the Maalaea Harbor. You'll find lots of local flavor at Kihei, and popular resort activities at Wailea. Further south, make sure you explore Haleakala National Park.

But since it's beaches that brought you to Maui, here's a few top beaches to add to your road trip planner: Makena State Park, a long stretch of golden sand. Visited often by dolphins and turtles. Go to Cove Beach Park off Kihei Road if you want to surf...or learn how to! Or have a blast sitting on the grass watching others surf...or learning to! Wailea Beach is a great place for a relaxing swim and snorkeling.

If you were asked to name 10 reasons why you vacationed in a certain place, you would probably start slowing down as you reach 5 or 6. But with Florida the list goes on and on. Theme parks are the obvious choice and could fill more than 10 places without a doubt just on theme parks alone.

Starting at the top

1. Magic Kingdom - Everyone young and old will find this just the most magical place to visit, from the minute you park you vehicle, you can feel the atmosphere. The staff are friendly from the minute to step from your car. Where else can you choose how you approach the park entrance? By Monorail, it takes you round the edge of the Lagoon, past some of Disney's resort hotels, depending which way the Monorail is running will depend on which hotels you see. Or take the Ferry Boat to the park entrance, the ferry glides across the Lagoon, giving you the opportunity to take your first shots of Cinderella's Castle. Space Mountain is also seen from here plus some of the Resort Hotels. Once at the gate, you are then able to see the Characters open the Park with Mickey Mouse being the guest of Honour. The turnstiles are then opened and you are then allowed to wonder around at your leisure through the different lands created to make this one of the most memorable days of your vacation. From the Tiki Rooms to the afternoon Share a Dream Come True Parade, you will find it all too much to take in, in just one day. We recommend you allow at least 2 days if you have not been there before. The Parade's are just out of this world, showing character past and present, but you need to prepare, the best positions start to be taken 2 hours before the parade starts. This is also a good time to visit the attractions you have missed should you feel that the parade is not for you. You will be sorry if you miss it.

2. Epcot - This is a different type of theme park all together. This is split in to two areas. Before I begin, if you are wondering what EPCOT means, then here you are. Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. Future world if you wish. The first part is all future world, how things could be in years to come, including some of the most exhilarating rides available. TEST TRACK is a must for any car enthusiast, where as Mission: Space is for those budding Astronauts in the family. This is truly a fascinating place. Then things just get better. The World Showcase is created around a beautiful lake, surrounded by 11 countries of the world. Each themed to match the country, some of them include restaurants, gift shops, attractions and shows. Time just flies by as you walk from one country to the next. The sights, sounds and smells that you experience is just fantastic.

3. Animal Kingdom - A much quieter park compared to some of the others, the pace is much slower and can also be one of the nicest days out. A good mixture of animals and attractions will make this a winner with all family members. Festival of the Lion King is a show not to be missed by any Lion King Fan. Join the circle of life as you sit in the theatre, and see the performance you will remember for years to come. Magic and Humour is all thrown in, this is the show for you all. Kilimanjaro Safaris is next, you travel through the savannah, passing wild animals most people will never get the chance to see close up, Giraffes, Rhinoceros, Elephants and Hippopotamus are just a few of the animals you will see on this jungle trip. Kali River Rapids are sure to cool you down after returning from your jungle trip. All together another fantastic day out.

4. MGM Studios - Scenes from Hollywood start your day off as you walk down the streets of this make believe film studios. Fantastic thrill rides like the Tower of Terror will have you screaming for more. Take a Limousine ride with Aerosmith on one of the fastest rollercoaster's you will encounter. Live shows throughout the day from Beauty and the Beast will bring memories flooding back for young and old. You can get close to the action and get a feel of what it's like to be in the spotlight. Playhouse Disney is a must for the younger guests, fans of Bear in the Big Blue House, Winnie the Pooh, Rolie Polie Olie and Stanley all appear on stage and bring the BIGGEST smiles to those little faces you will see all day. The best end to your day at MGM Studios is FANTASMIC. Mickey and friends perform in front of a massive crowd, fountains, flames and music bring a fantastic end to a fantastic day. This is one show you will be talking about for some time to come.

5. Seaworld - Seals, Dolphins and Killer Whales, this is what you can expect to await you when you visit this Aquatic Theme Park. The wild life here are just fascinating, if you are a fan of Flipper or Free Willy, this is the place for you. View the surrounding Orlando sky line when you ride the Sky Tower in the centre of the park. Shows throughout the day show just how intelligent these animals are. You even get the chance to feed the dolphins and the stingrays. Watch Shamu and his trainers as he performs amazing stunts, in and out of the water. Not exciting enough? Dare to go on Kraken, Seaworld's Rollercoaster. This is awesome, not for the faint hearted. The ride is floor less, you basically hang from your seats as you are twisted and turned through a series of corkscrew turns and steep drops, glued to your seat with the shear speed of the ride. Ride it if you dare, You have been warned.

6. Discovery Cove - Dolphin Lovers are in a world of their own here. Both Swimmers and non Swimmers can enjoy a day with their favourite animal. Interacting with these amazing creatures face to face. For a day to remember for ever. Souvenir Photo's are also taken for the guests to remember the time they have had there. Although one of the more expensive days out, it is probably by far the very best for some guests.

7. Island of Adventure - Thrill Ride fans are in for a treat. The Hulk must be the FASTEST off the mark Rollercoaster in Orlando, you feel like you have been shot from a gun when this ride starts, the adrenaline really starts pumping. The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman is a 3D thrill ride, like nothing you will have been on before. Dropped from a multi storey building, you are plummeting to your doom when Spiderman comes to your rescue. Phew that was close. Seuss Landing is a great place for preschoolers to enjoy themselves with A Cat in the Hat, Caro-seuss-el, the merriest Merry Go Round ever made, things just don't stop here. The youngsters will just love it.

8. Universal Studios - Lights, Camera, Action. From Shrek 4D to Twister - Ride it out, this is a great day our for all film fans. The famous Jaws ride will have you on the edge of your seat as you ride the waves of the shark infested waters. Terminator 2: 3D is a must for any fan of Arnie. I could not believe my eyes the first time I saw this live in front of my own eyes. Knickelodeon Studios is a definite must see, especially for the teenagers and younger. You may also be lucky enough to be there on one of the filing days and even get to be in one of the shows. Other shows are also filmed at Universal Studios, so keep your eyes and ears open. This could be your claim to fame.

9. Old Town - Situated on the US192, this is a replica of old style USA, Ferris Wheels, Vintage Car Cruises and Vintage Motorcycle Cruises make this a fantastic place to spend a few hours at the end of your day. There is something for everyone here, A shop where you can buy goods from back home in the UK, have a refreshing beer in one of the bars, have your palm read, the relaxed atmosphere helps you unwind and take in the sights. Unless you are feeling very daring, ride the Skycoaster, glide from around 300ft in the air, over a lake, at speeds of around 60mph, rather you than me.

10. Kennedy Space Centre - Right, you've tested Mission: Space at Epcot, now its time to see the real thing. If you plan your vacation in advance, you may even be lucky enough to see a shuttle or rocket launch from Cape Canaveral. It is also possible to have lunch with a trained Astronaut but this must be booked in advance. You can actually see some of the International Space Station which is being assembled there. The exhibitions are wonderful and it makes you wonder how these machines actually survive the journey they make.

Obviously the things I have mentioned are only a fraction of what you can see and do at these parks, I could just go on for days listing all the fantastic things for you to see and do. All the attractions above (apart from KSC which is around 1 ½ hrs drive) are all within 20 minutes from each other and more importantly 20 minutes from some of the best accommodation Orlando has to offer.
