Ventnor Is My Favourite Town

I want to start my story with one of my most favorite and emotional experiences whilst on holiday. I have been to the Isle of Wight and I liked the island very much. It is a green and covered in super flora and fauna and is nice and tranquil and one of the best places in Europe where my soul and mind can rest for a while from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But the town I liked most of all was that of Ventnor.

If you are going to visit the IOW, do drop into Ventnor. It's a lovely seaside resort with a long tradition, perfect for a family holiday as it has a real Mediterranean feel to it and is one of the hidden wonders of the island. It is situated right on the south coast tip of the Island looking out over the English Channel towards France. Built in part upon the inclined cliffs, it nestles in the shelter of steep sided hills and falls steeply towards the sea offering some magnificent views from the many viewing points one can stop at. This town is very nice because of its mild climate and therapeutic sea air. Just a minute or two from the town centre you feel this splendid atmosphere of sheltered tropical weather as Ventnor often receives the highest amount of sunny days for the whole of England.

Historically speaking, Ventnor began its life as just a small fishing rural community. Often associated with smuggling and the odd costal ship wreck due to the notorious Ventnor ledge, which used to catch unfamiliar sea captains unaware and cause catastrophic damage to their ships. In 1866 the Isle of Wright Railway was constructed and this date initiated fabulous growth with the community, the town prospered, flourishing with growth all over Ventnor. Due to the type of warm weather, Ventnor became a therapeutic centre with the UK's largest sanatorium for TB, which at the time was untreatable and deadly. Nearby Bonchurch became the haunt of a number of famous writers, including Charles Dickens.

He stayed in this village for a while very close to the Old Bonchurch Church, which has a really quaint plaque saying "Refurbished in 1086" outside on the wall. This small village is almost unchanged, with its village pond and pretty cottages can be reached by a pleasant and easy stroll along the sea wall from the harbour. Ventnor Botanical Gardens is one of the most famous attractions just outside the town. It is very beautiful and has a tremendous variety of flora and fauna on display. The local microclimate of Ventnor allows for many tropical and sub tropical plants of all kinds to grow, making for really fantastic experience as you walk through the many styles of gardens on display. Here you can find gorgeous plants from Japan, New Zealand and Australia. All through the village is the perfect place for growing many a rare flower or plant.

The temperature and humidity sees many flourishing tropical flowers just growing wild in many of the cottage gardens. However, around about in this area you can observe many features created by the landslip, as the surrounding hills are vulnerable to slippages due to their makeup and the steep hillsides they cling to. This geological aspect is called Graben. Due to this factor several houses have moved over the centuries as well as underground pipes and cables of supplies being destroyed as the movement occurs.

All in all Ventnor still remains one of the popular destinations to vacation to, Its sandy beach is great for relaxation; a walk along the coast path takes you to the famous 22 acre Botanic Gardens, Steephill Cove - one of the island's hidden gems. Do try and go there; take a camera it's just fantastic. Ventnor town has several supermarkets and a good mix of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurant, together with a great choice of accommodation and fine dining. Ventnor is considered one of the main IOW attractions.

Beginning of "Blue Horizons" Dolphin Show (Sea World Orlando)

This is the first few minutes of the wonderful new dolphin show at Sea World Orlando, "Blue Horizons". It's clear they're making a similar move towards a drama-based idea from the Dolphin Cove show, the same way the killer whale show went from the "Shamu Adventure" to "Believe". As of right now, the staging for this show is being built in the San Diego park, set to premiere 2010. (Filmed 8/6/09)

Captive Dolphins Suffer - Say No to Dolphinariums

In a recent article for the BBC, a former dolphin trainer from the Japanese town of Taiji - made infamous by the movie The Cove - gave an account of her life in the trade. On Taiji's place in the international dolphin trade, she said that foreigners would often come to Taiji to buy dolphins as it was the only place in the world where they were able to buy dolphins so easily.

The fishermen and the traders of Taiji are responsible for subjecting the dolphins to a cruel fate. It's death by spear or a lifetime in captivity for the animals. But the captors are not alone in their guilt because the demand for live dolphins comes from the many captive dolphin outlets throughout the world.

A lucrative trade
Captured dolphins make for a lucrative trade for traders, officials and middlemen. Last week, the government of the Solomon Islands (who take 25% revenue in taxes from the sale of each dolphin) made clear that the laws of the nation did not ban dolphin trading. There are powerful financial incentives for capturing and selling dolphins in places such as the Solomons and Japan.

Too many people think dolphin shows - where dolphins perform all sorts of tricks for the amusement of the audience - are good harmless family fun. They may not be aware of the cruelty and needless suffering. These same people would be horrified at the thought of taking their children to a dog fight or watching an animal torture video.

But they look so happy
The Humane Society of the United States in their webpage on marine mammals in captivity states: "Whales and dolphins travel long distances each day, sometimes swimming in a straight line for a hundred miles, other times remaining in a certain area for hours or days, moving several miles along a coastline and then turning to retrace their path. These marine mammals can dive up to several hundred meters and stay underwater for up to half an hour. They spend only 10 to 20% of their time at the surface."

A captive dolphin's lifespan is significantly shorter than that of its wild counterparts.

Swimming with dolphins - can't be bad?
Since the 1970s, Dolphin Assisted Therapy (DAT) has been endorsed by some "experts" for helping those with disabilities such as autism. Many children have travelled to Florida and other dolphin hubs in the hope of finding improvement for their condition but the merits of these therapies have been questioned. Animal welfare groups have warned of their dangers to humans and to dolphins. Dolphins can injure or drown people and some carry bacteria that can infect human beings with conditions such as brucellosis.

Recreational swimming with dolphins is still popular in many parts of the world. In the Caribbean, "dolphinariums" cater to the cruiseship traffic.

Clearly, a dolphinarium does not allow these animals to behave in a natural or healthy manner.

The World SPCA outlines some practices dangerous to dolphins such as beaching themselves to be petted and warns against anthropomorphising. Dolphins behave in human-like ways (with gestures such as waving and nodding) because they are hungry and NOT because they are being friendly.

Swimming close to dolphins is great fun - when done in THEIR environment in the wild. I've seen grown adults moved to tears while snorkelling with a pod of dolphins in the Red Sea. It's an experience not to be missed.

End the cruelty of captive dolphins
Earlier this month, Chris Porter, a marine mammal trainer and trader in New Zealand, set free his last 17 dolphins, having become disillusioned with the industry (which enabled him to have a lucrative business). He claims the death of a whale trainer at Sea World by Tilikum - a Killer Whale he once trained - was the turning point in making his decision. Porter asked: "Are we really educating and providing the best representation for these animals in an aquarium?"

How can you help? Next time someone you know suggests an afternoon at the dolphin show, give them some info. If they truly love these animals, they might change their mind. Sign the petitions and do your part; the dolphins need all the help they can get.

11. Exmouth

Located on the North West Cape of Western Australia, Exmouth is the gateway to the Ningaloo Marine Park and Cape Range National Park. It is the perfect base to visit these incredible natural wonders. There are all types of tropical fruits grown further out of town, and an abundance of seafood available. There are also a number of farm stays available if you would prefer a rural experience. For a relaxed, enjoyable holiday this is a great option.

14. Kennedy Range National Park

For those who want to get off the beaten track to the outback, the Kennedy Range National Park has everything, especially with excellent highways along the way. Drive through Meekatharra and Wiluna to meet the locals and enjoy a pub meal. With wildflowers blooming in every direction, and rocky outcrops dotting the horizon, it is an experience you will never forget. A great adventure is to hike the Murchison River, located three hours drive north from Geraldton. One of the great attractions is Mount Augustus, which is twice the size of Ayers Rock. With a sea of stars at night and incredible panoramic vistas at daybreak, your outback adventure will bring a lifetime of memories.

15. Kununurra

This is where outback adventure begins. Located in Western Australia's far north region, Kununurra produces most of the states fruit and vegetables and has perfect year round weather. A beautiful place to visit is the 'Hidden Valley' or Mirima National Park. Other popular attractions are the Bungle Bungle, Lake Argyle, Gibb River, Mitchell Plateau, Ord River and the Argyle Diamond Mine. There are all types of adventure sports available, with island cruises, four wheel drive safaris and abseiling just some of them, and the four main National Parks in the area promise unrivalled beauty. One of the most popular spots is Lucky Bay, with Blue Haven Beach and Twilight Cove great for snorkelling. Tanker Jetty is ideal for fishing, with local seals an added attraction.

17. Margaret River

This is rich, fertile land at its best, with over 60 wineries in the area making it a popular location for an indulgent, relaxing getaway. Located three and half hours south of Perth, Margaret River offers incredible restaurants, cheeses, jams, olives and even a local chocolate factory. Natural attractions include a number of underground caves, beaches, forests and bushwalking tracks bringing you to magnificent lookouts. Augusta is the perfect spot for whale watching, and there are plenty of surfing competitions to watch along the beach. With such a diverse number of attractions, Margaret River is right on top of the list.

18. Geraldton

Situated on Champion Bay, just over 400km north from Perth, Geraldton is a popular coastal town and often known as the gateway to the north. There is every type of water sport available, and plenty of beautiful beaches. A great time to visit is July to November during wildflower season, and it is also a great base to visit the Kalbarri National Park, Murchison River gorges, Monkey Mia (famous for its friendly dolphins) and the Abrolhos Islands. Within Geraldton, there are plenty of museums, parks, lookouts and art galleries. The Point Moore Lighthouse is a well known landmark made from steel, and the Western Australia Museum is a recent attraction.

19. Shark Bay

Shark Bay encompasses over 1500 km of Western Australia's coastline. It is a world heritage listed area and offers natural attractions such as Zuydorp Cliffs and the Wooramel Seagrass Bank. Another unique feature is Shell Beach, which is the ultimate beach for shell lovers with six kilometres of shells alone, over 10 metres deep. Travellers flock to the Shark Bay region to experience its marine and coastal wonders, and it is perfect for boating, diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. There are caravan parks and plenty of accommodation dotting the coast for those who want to stay here for a relaxing holiday.

20. Port Hedland

This is a friendly, coastal town known for its magnificent weather, fishing, crabbing and history. It is a two hour flight from Perth and has plenty of attractions. Within the city you can visit Dalgety House Museum, the Open Air Train Museum and the Koombana Lookout which promises beautiful views. The creeks at Pretty Pool and Six Mile Creek are also great for a day trip and the ever present wildflowers make this a pretty place to visit. You can't miss the big ships and trains which are in and out of the Port, which make it a unique destination.

21. Albany

You won't want to leave Albany. With its wild scenery, dark seas and rugged coastline it is steeped in history with convict jails, whaling ships and cottages dotting the landscape. On the south coast of Western Australia, Albany is a five hour drive from Perth. The Amity Trail is one of the best ways to see the city, which winds past historical buildings and interesting landmarks. The Torndirrup National Park is worth visiting, plus the Natural Bridge on the coast. There are whale watching cruises which bring you up close and personal with these gentle giants of the sea.

4/17]..pretty good swim. the surf report said it was gonna be 56°, by the time i got to the cove, it was 59°. visibility was about 10 feet. a couple feet away from me, there was a sea lion hunting for food, as well as a small family of dolphins. NICE. i have footage of the sea lion, but the camera was really shaky. i'll put up screen caps of that later. this is just a test run for the mini-documentary i wanna film over the summer about marine life/beach culture. also...the video gets a bit more chaotic and disorienting at the end...the surge starts to pick up and become stronger...it sounds really violent haha..

Rick O'Barry is the man who trained the dolphins to do the tricks that were so endearing — and that spawned a whole industry of sea worlds and marine worlds and flipperworlds around the globe, committing dolphins to a lifelong sentence of enslavement and humiliation, all in the name of our entertainment. These days Rick O'Barry feels sickeningly guilty about that, and has spent decades since dedicated to freeing dolphins. That mission has seen him arrested all around the world, thrown into jail, banned from conferences and other venues. But it has also seen him expose the most horrendous and senseless massacre of dolphins, an annual slaughter of 23000 dolphins that takes place for several months every year in a tiny cove near a town called Taji in Japan.
