What Can You Expect back You Swim with Dolphins?

Dolphins have always attracted humans' attention with their grin, their social behavior, their acrobatics and their natural curiosity. In fact, the most popular dolphin specie is the bottlenose dolphin.

Why bottlenose dolphins? Well, being the specie with the largest population in the world and the fact that their habitat is spread around in all oceans and seas, it is the most likely to be captured and sent to aquariums and zoos.

When you are watching a show performed by dolphins and supervised by a dolphin trainer, people have the idea that these marine mammals could not hurt a fly. While a well trained dolphin is not as intimidating as a close encounter with a 230 kg wild animal is a totally different experience.

What can you expect when you swim with dolphins? Well, after making arrangement with a place such as Ocho Rios in Jamaica or at the Secret garden and dolphin habitat at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, for a fee that ranges around $230 Cdn or if you wish to push it a little you can become a trainer for a day at the Mirage for $500 US.

If you choose to swim with dolphins, you can expect to attend an informative session on how to proceed while swimming with dolphins. Then you will be fitted with a lifejacket and will enter the water, either a pool or a cove depending on the place. Then a dolphin or two will swim by your side to allow you to pet them. Guided by the dolphin trainer, they will perform a series of tricks such as clapping, synchronized jumping, etc.

Then you will be pulled while holding the dorsal fin of a dolphin, which will pull you around. You may also become the happy recipient of a friendly kiss on the cheek. The dolphins will also push you around the pool, on your stomach, with the tip of their snouts on the bottom part of your feet. Your feet may be a bit sore after the ride; it will seem trivial compared to the pleasure of the ride.

If on the other hand, you wish to become a dolphin trainer for a day by participating to the program at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, your experience will be different. First, you will attend an informative session. You will also be fitted in a trainer's attire.

Although you may have to get wet, you will focus on the training and caring for these marine mammals. You will be responsible for some feedings, teaching tricks and practicing routines, learning the sign language that represents instructions for dolphins. At the end of the day, you will also receive a certificate.

It does not matter if you choose to swim with dolphins or if you decide to become a dolphin trainer for a day, either way, it will be the experience of a lifetime. Other places can offer these services such as Miami and other Florida cities, Mexico, areas in the Caribbean and Southern cities in the United States of America.

SeaWorld's Opposition to the Drive Fisheries

Each year, hundreds of dolphins are slaughtered by Japanese fishermen in a brutal hunt known as the "drive fishery". Stewart Clark, head of SeaWorld's Discovery Cove, discusses the company's position on this practice. SeaWorld, like every accredited zoo and aquarium in America, stands against the drive fishery and remains committed to seeing it stopped. Learn more at www.actfordolphins.org SeaWorld's commitment goes further, though. Today, as they have for the past 45 years, the SeaWorld parks dedicate their time, energy, and resources to real world action intended to improve the lives of dolphins, whales, and hundreds of other marine species. This dedication is most clearly illustrated in the over 17000 ill, abandoned, orphaned, and injured animals rescued by SeaWorld to date. The goal of this program is returning healthy animals to the wild. To find out more about SeaWorld's rescue, rehabilitation, and release program, watch the World of Difference Animal Rescue video at www.youtube.com

Top Five Places to Visit in Jamaica

"Life is one big road with lots of signs. So when you're riding through the ruts, don't complicate your mind. Flee from hate, mischief and jealousy. Don't bury your thoughts, put your vision to reality. Wake Up and Live!" A famous quote from Good ole Bob Marley!

Like every other country Jamaica has its ups and downs but I must tell you this place is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L and is still populated by wonderful fun loving people. How do I know this? Well, to be frank this is the place I call home. In my twenty four years of life - both in and out - of Jamaica I have witnessed some extremely beautiful scenery. In fact just the other day I visited a beach not listed on the radar, it goes by the name '' cotton tree'' ... It's just a splendid sight to behold! On your next trip or visit to Jamaica, once you're in the Ocho Rios area, please be sure to ask your tour guide about this hidden treasure... It is truly a master piece.

OK, let's get cracking on the Top 5 Places to Visit in Jamaica.

Bob Marley's Nine Mile - St. Ann

Give or take, you may already know this but for the prospective visitors reading this, allow me to enlighten you. Nine Mile is the Birth Place and final resting place of The late yet Legendary Robert ''Nesta'' Marley, Popularly known as Bob Marley.

Fun Fact: Bob Marley was and is still best known for his reggae songs, which include the hits "I Shot the Sheriff", "No Woman, No Cry", "Three Little Birds", "Exodus", "Could You Be Loved", "Jammin", "Redemption Song", and "One Love".

Nine Mile is located just outside of a place we call Brown's Town, St. Ann. On your trip to Bob Marley's Nine Mile you will past through various villages. Be sure to ask your tour guide to stop at one or if time permits a few of these villages as it is truly an eye opener. This is where you learn about the rural parts of Jamaica - the real Jamaica.

Upon arrival at Bob Marley's Nine Mile you will be most likely be greeted by a Rasta-man. He is responsible for opening the gate just wide enough for the driver to get on the compound and then, he locks it. Here is a heads up for you. They will be sure to let you know that the laws inside the compound are totally different from those outside the huge walls. What is so different? The Ganja and the herbs grown behind those gates are a spectacular sight!

Dunn's River Falls - St. Ann

The famous Dunn's River Falls is located on the island's north coast, just outside of Ocho Rios. Dunn's River falls is very unique. The sound of the waters rushing down those huge rocks, the fresh scent in the atmosphere, lush vegetation! Sigh, it's absolutely extraordinary! As a visitor to this beautiful piece of paradise you are offered the opportunity to climb - whether up or down - the falls either by yourselves or with a tour guide. Hint, if it's your first time I highly suggest using a tour guide as they already know the place and will be able to show you the foot holds among other things that will get you down the falls safely. At the top of the falls you will find tranquility.

Fun Fact: 1. There is not much noise from the rushing waters there only the wonderful sound of birds chirping and singing while too exploring there habitat.

2. While climbing down you will definitely notice some small pools naturally created by Mother Nature, where you can stop to rest, take pictures or do whatever you please. The Doctor's Cove Beach -

Port Royal - Port Royal

Once upon a time Port Royal was a popular place where pirates would come and spend their treasures. It held the reputation as the richest and the wickedest city in the world! During the 17th century the British actively encouraged and even paid the buccaneers that were based in Port Royal to attack the ships belonging to the Spanish and French colonials!

Fun Fact: On June 7th, 1962 a massive earthquake struck Port Royal. This particular earthquake caused two thirds of this city to sink into the Caribbean Sea! Just like that!

Today Port Royal is known as ''The City That Sank'' and is still covered by approximately twenty-five feet of water.
History is a wonderful thing. It is said that pirates from all around the world congregated at Port Royal after this devastating event. They came as far away as from Madagascar which is located on the far side of Africa.

The Rose Hall Great House - St. James

The Rose Hall Great House is a very popular attraction, both to locals and visitors. This great house was home to The Late Annie Palmer, otherwise known as ''The White Witch of Rose Hall''. As long as I could remember Annie Palmer has always been painted as a beautiful yet extremely devious character. Legend has it that Annie Palmer - The White Witch of Rose Hall - found great joy in practicing witch craft, poising the minds of young white women who came into the island and most of all... Legend has it that she was a born killer as all of her husband's died suspiciously! Among other things of course but this would be too long for me to get into today.

And Last but definitely not least Dolphin's Cove - Ocho Rios St.Ann

Dolphin's Cove is labeled as the biggest maritime attraction in the entire Caribbean! Isn't that something! Dolphin Cove is the perfect host for a family fun day. At a cost, you are presented with the opportunity to interact with their marine animals such as dolphins, manta-rays(without barbs), nurse sharks and so on. I think it would be easier if I gave you a synopsis of their packages:

o The "Touch" Program
o The "Encounter Swim" with the dolphins
o The "Swim With" the dolphins
o The Swim, Hold and Feed the Sharks &
o Be the "Sea Keeper For a Day"

Marine animals aren't the only things that they cater for though, they host activities such as nature walks where you get to interact with animals such as:

Donkey's, goats, sheep, the Iguana, Jamaican Yellow Snake (not poisonous), turtles, ducks, birds and so on. If you do not know what some of these animals are just do a Google search using the image feature, you will be sure to find what you're looking for.

Jamaica Hotels - Best Adventure Vacations

Image : http://www.flickr.com

How would like to spend a vacation in Jamaica and get to explore some of the best adventures? I know there are many adventure lovers out there who only travelers to places which will allow them to experience an abundance of activities. You will be pleased to know that this island is more than a spot for families and romantic couples and it is possible to explore areas which will take you soaring in the skies. It is easy for you to stay at the Jamaica hotels, resorts, villas, cottages or even cabins and spend days which are filled with non-stop fun. Just imagine skydiving and flying over 100 miles per hour at Boscobel Aerodrome in St Mary, definitely a thrilling experience!

Most of the travelers to this island have one aim and that is to have endless fun in the sun. But, there is nothing wrong with wanting to have once-in-a-lifetime adventure trip, as you can find a wide variety of theme vacation packages to have any kind of experience. If you are staying in the resort town of Ocho Rios you can climb the slippery falls at Dunn's River or enjoy zip lining at the new Mystic Mountain attractions. But, if you want to zip line over one of the beautiful waterfalls on the island, you have to visit the YS Falls in St Elizabeth.

When you are booking reservations for this trip, you have to be carefully with the flights that you are taking especially from the Northern states in America. These are usually long flights and you want to ensure that you have fewer stopovers and not ruin the start of this vacation. The best ways to ensure that you get the best or right flights is to book in advance, so you probably want to check the available flights that American Airlines will have for the Norman Manley or Sangster's International airports in the two cities.

Another factor that should be given some consideration is securing the best rooms at one of the Jamaica hotels. There is nothing stopping you from staying at one of the all inclusive hotels, because even though they will provide offerings that can keep you onsite for your entire vacation, you would still get the opportunity to explore. Not only will you have everything provided for you, but you could spend your night basking in luxury at Royal Plantation in Ocho Rios after spending long hours climbing the mountains or flying through the forest. Don't forget to check out the Dolphins Cove in this area as well and swim with the bottleneck dolphins; your children will love this if they are on this trip!

If you want to save significantly more on this trip, you could even check the adventure packages that the all inclusive in Jamaica has to offer before making your reservations. Most times, the resorts will provide a number of activities onsite as well as provide tours that you could take you to a several attractions outside. So, if you examine the packages carefully, you don't have to pay for an adventure tour that might be already included in the price for your stay.

Some of the adventures that you find on these tours include horseback riding, rafting on the Rio Grande or White River, river tubing, canopy tours or sailing on the catamaran boat rides such as Cool Running's which will treat you to refreshing red stripe beers and pulsating reggae music. Unquestionably, these adventures will be much fun with a firsthand experience, reading about it cannot fully describe all the adrenalin rush and thrill that is awaiting you.

Florida's Best Kept Secret

Would you die for a romantic getaway where your boss can't find you? Less than two hours south from Ft. Lauderdale International Airport, or an hour closer from Miami, is the laid back community of Key Largo. With a reputation for die-hard beer guzzling fishermen and no frills accommodations, most travelers pass it by on their way to Key West. Don't be fooled by what you see and don't see from the roadside.

There are secluded millionaire homes, as well as reasonably priced secluded Bed and Breakfasts that welcome you with everything from eclectic air conditioned private suites to your own private sandy cove for watching the awesome sunsets you'll only see in the Florida Keys. No I do not work for their Chamber of Commerce.

Hidden behind trees and down winding gravel roads to the sea, if you miss the Mile Markers on the road, you'll pass these hideaways and never know they're there. Some B&Bs will provide full kitchens stocked for breakfasts, with Jacuzzis and the use of their boats and bikes at no extra charge. After a rest stop at the worst possible looking broken down shack (I couldn't wait for the next gas station), I asked an old geezer sitting at the darker than pitch bar for directions to a decent restaurant. With an irresistible smile and a light step, the old fellow politely took my arm and debonairly directed me to what turned out to be one of the best fresh caught fish restaurants on the East Coast with the unruly name of Hobos. It was my first lesson in understanding the natives. From fishermen, explorers and X-husbands to artists and wannabe writers, you might be talking to the next Ernest Hemingway.

I stayed at a B&B owned by a young descendant of architect John Roebling and engineer Washington Roebling, renowned builders of the Brooklyn Bridge. Mullet Mansion is hosted by Suzy Roebling who specializes in packages for Weddings, Honeymoons and Anniversaries, with music, flowers, wedding cake, champagne and all the trimmings. You'll find her online at the Key Largo Bed and Breakfast Directory.

Key Largo is not only famous for Bogey and Bacall, but the spectacular underwater John Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park. Here you can snorkel and swim with the Dolphins as I did, or just enjoy the natural beauty of this tropical paradise from a glass bottom boat, as I did.

If you're looking for nightlife Duval Street, Key West rocks. It's about two hours south on the Overseas Highway and it has terrific restaurants from cheap to expensive. I always warn friends who've never been that Key West is noisy, colorful, and crowded all year. But strolling the back streets and side streets of old town Key West transports you back a hundred years to the seafaring town with the gingerbread houses. Tours of The Hemingway House run all day long and cost a lot more than when I first saw it. But if you're looking for the shack Tennessee Williams rented, be prepared with a map and good shoes .

When you return to sleepy Key Largo you'll probably want to fall into your hammock to watch the blood red sunset on the water. But don't forget to listen for that whistle on the wind. You know the one where Bogart says ... "You know how to whistle don't you?" Then you might want to retreat inside, kick back and drink a toast to that venerable Brooklyn Bridge.

Ten Essential Things to Do When You Visit Jamaica

Image : http://www.flickr.com

This green jewel basking among the warm blue waters of the Caribbean is a great place to take in exotic scenery and Old-World history. Jamaica has excellent facilities for tourists and great beaches and outdoor destinations. You can do a lot, from seeing remnants of the island's history, to exploring the verdant jungle on foot and horseback, to working on your tan in one of the numerous beaches.

1.) Spanish Town

Visit the former capital of Jamaica, Spanish Town, and get an idea of what made Christopher Columbus enthusiastic about the beauty of the island. Check out the old buildings including the St. Jago de la Vega cathedral built by the Spaniards. Have your picture taken in the Spanish Town Square, a charming representation of colonial architecture brought over by the island's colonizers.

2.) Negril

Those who have a passion for activities such as scuba diving, sailing, fishing, and windsurfing are in for a treat when they visit this town 80 kilometers beyond Montego Bay. A bustling nightlife and many small shops are among the things tourists will encounter in this place where an alternative lifestyle was practiced in the past. Watch the sunset from West Point, the westernmost place in the whole of the island, then dance until sunrise in the many clubs along the beach.

3.) Ochos Rios

This town whose name means "eight rivers" in Spanish was once a sleepy village that now boasts of international-class resorts and hotels. Ochos Rios is a haven of gardens, such as the Shaw Park Botanical Gardens. See the sparkling beauty of Dunn's River Falls, dine in one of the local restaurants and sample their varied cuisine, and visit Brimmer Hall, a plantation where, like in the old days, crops are still cultivated and harvested according to age-old methods.

4.) Montego Bay

This large, modern city is the second largest in Jamaica. While there, drop in at Rose Hall, a restored house belonging to an old sugar plantation. Gaze upon the blue Caribbean from the city avenues with that special someone and then take them frolicking on one of the city's three main beaches.

5.) Falmouth

Located 40 km west of Montego Bay, this resort town contains the Church of Saint Paul. Visit the Greenwood Great House, which was once owned by poetess Elizabeth Barrett-Browning and her husband. For the energetic, the Martha Brae can be rafted from Rafters Village.

6.) Kingston

Jamaica's capital, Kingston offers a lot to see and do. Learn about the island's past by visiting the White Marl Museum, dedicated to the Arawak Indians who lived on Jamaica, and the Port Royal, which features exhibits and information on the bad old days of the buccaneers. Sample the cuisine of the local restaurants and buy a souvenir from the Crafts Market, and if you're feeling lucky, you can gamble on horse races in Cuyamas Park.

7.) Treasure Reef

Swim with marine life at this aquatic park located near the Dunn's River Falls. Make some piscine friends while feeding the sharks and interacting with the dolphins at Dolphin Cove. Or, if getting wet doesn't suit you, explore the lush greenery of the Jungle Trail Walk.

8.) Green Grotto Caves

Go exploring this cavern east of Discovery Bay. A sanctuary for people since prehistoric times, these caves have seen occupants such as the Taino Indians, refugee Spaniards hiding from the English, smugglers, and rum runners. Green Grotto is a kilometer and a half long and contains an underground lake, Grotto Lake.

9.) Water Sports

Outdoor activities of all kinds can be found on Jamaica, but among the most prevalent are water sports, which are available at myriad locations. Fresh and saltwater fishing is permitted without a license. Parasailing, scuba diving, surfing, rafting, and the like are also offered at many locations such as Negril.

10.) Beaches

Jamaica would be nothing without its beaches. The island offers many types to suit any person's tastes. From the busy sand of MoBay and Ocho Rios to the private tranquility of the beaches of Port Antonio, Jamaica offers beachgoers of all type the blend of sun, fun and friendship that will suit them perfectly.

Florida Water Parks

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Seaworld

When visiting Orlando and particularly the theme parks, it is strongly advisable to start with SeaWorld Adventure Park, as its stadium style shows ensure short queues under the heat. The park features sea lion, dolphin and orca shows, which run at particular times; therefore it is also good to plan in advance the day with the help of a show schedule.

Discovery Cove

Discovery cove is not the typical park in Florida, it is more about interacting with nature and animals. People have the chance to swim with dolphins, learn about exotic birds, tropical fishes and land mammals, explore artificial coves. Situated just opposite to SeaWorld, there are no roller coasters and all people need is swimming suits and snorkels for the day.

Wet 'N Wild

Considered America's best water park, Wet'N Wild has attractions for the entire family. It was also given the first Lifetime Achievement Award by the World Waterpark Association thanks to its high quality service and world-class thrill rides, which ensure a full-day of fun. It is run by Universal Studios Recreational Group since 1998 and it is strategically located on International drive.

Aquatica Park

Aquatica, SeaWorld's waterpark has got the most thrilling rides amongst Orlando's water parks. There are two river rides, a couple of massive wave pools, more than 30 water slides and white sand beaches, surrounded by the most amazing and exotic sceneries. The park is part of the Worlds of Discovery, who also run Busch Gardens Tampa and Adventure Island.

Miami Seaquarium

Located on Virginia Bay and overlooking Biscayne Bay over a 35 acre area, the park features impressive sea mammal shows and educational presentations about birds, alligators, manatees, sharks and other species. The Miami Seaquarium is also conveniently situated near to Miami downtown.

The Ten Best Cruise Destinations

Generally when considering cruise popularity you will find that it is determined by a number of things, which can include how convenient it is to reach the cruise liner from your home, whether you have a young family, your age, whether it your first time or if you are single or married.

It is therefore wise to ask yourself what you expect from a cruise before making a decision. Are you looking for black tie glamour, informal luxury, to travel only with people your own age, plenty of entertainment, beautiful surroundings and nature, a good deal or activity and are you traveling on a shoestring?

That is why the top ten cruise destinations are based on previous experience and include cruise holidays in a variety of temperate zones. In effect, there is something here for everyone:

Hawaii

The Hawaiian Islands are a tropical paradise everyday of the year with its green clad volcanic cliffs and awe-inspiring tropical fauna and flora. Visit the magical Dolphin Cove, the fascinating Sealife Park and of course the Polynesian Cultural Centre.

The Caribbean

The best time to cruise the Caribbean is in January and February as the weather is perfect most days, but there is often threat of hurricanes from Mid June to the beginning of December. You can visit all the Caribbean islands as there is only a short distance between each of them, but the Caribbean is not as tropically lush as Hawaii.

Antarctica

Cruises to Antarctica are usually expensive so not suited to those on a low budget and cruise ships do not operate in the Antarctic winter, from March to September. These cruises combine a unique blend of comfort and adventure with soaring glacier cliffs, icebergs and penguin colonies.

The Mediterranean

The warmest months and the best time for sun seekers to visit the mediterrannean is from May to September. It should be noted that many of the
ports are often very busy during the summer, but there are certainly a large amount of destinations worth visiting, including the Greek Islands, Costa del Sol, Liguria Coast and the French Riviera.

Fjords of Norway

The best time to visit the Fjords of Norway is from June to August when it is not so cold. Cruises around these natural wonders are breathtakingly beautiful and humbling, as you sail inside enormous, yet narrow fjords surrounded by high cliffs.

Alaska

The best time to cruise to Alaska is in the warmest months of June to August, as daylight is longer for sightseeing and taking photographs. It's a special place to cruise by glaciers and snow caped jagged peaks on your way to numerous photogenic ports.

Mexico

November to April is the best time to cruise to Mexico, as they are cooler, dryer and less humid than the summer months. This is not the destination for those looking to relax, as Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco and the other ports of call on the Mexican Riviera are full of life and music.

South Pacific

The South Pacific covers a broad area and its destinations include the fertile tropical paradises such as Fiji and Tahiti.

Galapagos

The Galapagos Island are home to giant tortoises, seal lions, penguins, fur seals, marine iguanas and are a place that Charles Darwin visited to observe the unique wildlife.

The Baltic Sea

A cruise to the Baltic Sea is not for the faint hearted in the colder months, but June to august is ideal for visiting Tallinn, Helsinki, Copenhagen and Stockholm.

Diving Apo Reef with WWF Philippines

Got a chance to do two dives out into Apo Reef with the WWF. Truly amazing, even if I didn't spot any mantas. There were reef sharks, but too far for footage and above, dolphins and flying fish broke the surface while we were on the boat. Apo Reef Natural Park is the second largest contiguous reef in the world and the largest in the Philippines. It is home to almost twice as many coral species (500+) compared to the Great Barrier Reef. Alongside Tubbataha reef in the Sulu Sea, both reefs are the crowing glory of the coral triangle that spans the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. The trip was sponsored by Cebu Pacific Air. Every time you fly Cebu Pacific, you have the option of making a donation to the conservation of Mindoro and Apo Reef through their 'Bright Skies Program.' Mindoro is most famous for its sustainable hand-line yellow fin tuna that is exported to Europe. The day also marked my first year anniversary since my open water certification. Among all my 50+ dives, I can say with confidence that these two were the ones that had the most 'soul.' Definitely going back. It was great to spend quality time with the team from WWF Philippines and dive once more with Lory Tan. I first met Lory in an Anvaya Cove giant clam seeding project back in December '09. Videos were shot using a JVC FM1 with an Ikelite V8 LED system.
